Abstract

Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) remain serious public health issues, including in Banda Aceh City, where cases are showing an increasing trend, particularly among adolescents. Schools play a strategic role in prevention efforts through health education, with teachers as key agents of change. Purpose: To improve teachers' knowledge, attitudes, and communication skills regarding HIV/AIDS health education at SMA Negeri 1 Banda Aceh. Methods: The activity utilized a structured educational method, encompassing initial observation, interactive counseling, group discussions, role-play, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests. The two-day program involved 50 teachers from SMA Negeri 1 Banda Aceh. Results: There was a significant increase in teachers' knowledge levels from fair to good, a change in attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), and improved communication skills in conveying health information to students. The average increase in knowledge, attitudes, and skills was more than 50%. Conclusion: This activity has proven effective in strengthening teachers' roles as health communicators and HIV/AIDS prevention agents in the school environment. Participatory-based health education is recommended as a sustainable strategy to support HIV/AIDS promotion and prevention efforts among adolescents.
